Report Writing & Courtroom Practices

Accurate reports and effective courtroom testimony are essential to successful animal control and animal cruelty investigations. This course provides animal control officers and other animal welfare professionals with practical skills to improve investigative documentation, prepare clear and thorough reports, and confidently present their cases in court.

Participants will learn best practices for report writing, including documenting observations, organizing facts, maintaining objectivity, and ensuring reports are complete, accurate, and defensible. The course also explores courtroom preparation, professional conduct, presenting evidence, responding to questions, and providing credible testimony under cross-examination.

Students will work through a custom-designed workbook during class, using practical exercises to develop their own investigative report. That report will then serve as the foundation for a courtroom practical, allowing participants to apply what they have learned by presenting their case and practicing courtroom testimony in a realistic, hands-on setting.

Through practical instruction and real-world examples, attendees will gain the tools needed to strengthen their cases, communicate their findings effectively, and better prepare for the challenges of courtroom proceedings.
